Murmuration is an original kinetic sculpture made for VALA Eastside's "Sculpture in Motion" exhibit in October and November of 2017. It is a mechanical representatin of birds in flight. It was inspired by 1980s artificial life experiments, specifically Craig Reynolds' simulation of bird flocks. I'm always fascinated by emergent behaviors like flocking, where a small set of rules can create endless variety. With this piece I wanted to capture the feeling of what it means to describe reality in mathematical ways.
